    Short verdict

Function Health is strong value for a broad annual health baseline, if you will act on the results with a clinician. It is the wrong choice if you need treatment: it does not prescribe. Pricing and test counts are from Function's official pages, checked October 2026. This is a desk-researched editorial review, not a sponsored one.

    What is Function Health?

Function Health is a direct-to-consumer lab-testing membership. You order without a referral from your own doctor, give blood at a Quest Diagnostics location, and get results in a dashboard that tracks markers over time. The membership includes two rounds of testing a year and covers 160+ lab tests in total, with clinician review of your results.

The advertised price was $365 per year when we checked. Earlier coverage often quotes $499; that figure is out of date. Confirm the current price at checkout.

    What does Function Health test?

    • Metabolic: comprehensive metabolic panel, glucose, HbA1c and fasting insulin.
    • Cardiovascular: full lipid panel plus ApoB and Lp(a), the two markers most standard check-ups miss.
    • Hormones: total and free testosterone, oestradiol, DHEA-S, cortisol, and a full thyroid panel (TSH, free T3, free T4, antibodies).
    • Inflammation: hs-CRP and homocysteine.
    • Nutrients: vitamin D, B12, folate, ferritin and magnesium.
    • Organ function and screening: kidney and liver markers, autoimmunity, and some cancer-related markers.

    What is not included

No DEXA scan, no gut microbiome testing, no genetic testing and no urine testing. If body composition or bone density matters to you, budget for a DEXA separately.

    Who is Function Health for?

Best fit: people optimising their health who want a comprehensive annual baseline and year-on-year trends, and who have a doctor to take actionable results to.

Not ideal for: anyone who needs active treatment or prescription medication, or anyone on TRT or a GLP-1 who needs labs every few months. Two draws a year is too infrequent for that. See types of TRT if hormone treatment is your actual question.

    Is Function Health worth it?

At $365 a year, the membership costs about $30 a month. Ordering a comparable spread of markers individually through direct-pay labs would cost meaningfully more for a single draw (our estimate, based on list prices), and you would lose the trend tracking.

The value case is strong if you will act on results. The drawbacks: no ongoing coaching, no prescribing, and more markers means more borderline results that can cause anxiety without changing a decision. Decide who will interpret your results before you pay.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does Function Health cost?+
Function Health advertised its membership at $365 per year when we last checked official pricing in October 2026, which works out to about $30 a month. Optional add-on tests cost extra, and any treatment you need afterwards is paid to a separate clinician. Confirm the current price at checkout because membership pricing has changed over time.
What biomarkers does Function Health test?+
The membership covers 160+ lab tests across the year, including a metabolic panel, a full lipid panel with ApoB and Lp(a), hormones (testosterone, oestradiol, DHEA-S, cortisol and a full thyroid panel), inflammation markers such as hs-CRP, nutrients including vitamin D, B12, ferritin and magnesium, kidney and liver function, autoimmunity and some cancer-related markers. It does not include DEXA scans, gut microbiome testing, genetic testing or urine testing.
    Is Function Health worth it?+
It is worth it if you have never had markers like ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP and fasting insulin measured and you will act on the results with a clinician. Bought individually, a similar broad panel would cost more than the membership. It is poor value if you already run a targeted annual panel, or if you need treatment rather than data, because Function does not prescribe.
How does Function Health compare to Hone Health?+
They solve different problems. Function is a broad testing membership with clinician-reviewed results. Hone is a clinician-led care service focused on hormone health, including evaluation and testosterone treatment when appropriate. Choose Function for a broad baseline; choose Hone if you are specifically investigating low testosterone and want a treatment pathway.
    Can Function Health prescribe medication?+
No. Clinicians review your results and flag findings, but Function does not prescribe medication or manage ongoing treatment. If your results show something that needs treatment, such as low testosterone, high ApoB or a thyroid problem, you need to take them to your own doctor or a clinical service.
Is Function Health available in all states?+
Not necessarily. Lab-testing services are regulated state by state, and availability can change. Check the eligibility step at Function Health checkout for your state before planning around it.
How long does it take to get Function Health results?+
Results are released through the member dashboard as each test is completed, so most arrive within days to a couple of weeks of the blood draw while some specialised tests take longer. The clinician summary follows once the panel is complete. Check current timing with Function, as it depends on the tests and the lab.
Is Function Health covered by insurance?+
Function Health is a direct-pay membership and is not billed to health insurance. Some members use HSA or FSA funds; confirm eligibility with your plan administrator before relying on it.
    Does Function Health test testosterone?+
Yes. The hormone panel includes total and free testosterone along with related markers such as SHBG and oestradiol. A low result is a starting point, not a diagnosis: confirming low testosterone requires repeat morning testing and a clinical evaluation, which Function does not provide.
